Counting is just the start. Here’s what a strong math foundation looks like.
“Number sense” is a child’s intuitive feel for quantities — knowing that 5 is more than 3, that numbers have an order, and that the numeral “4” means four things. It matters more than rote counting.
Three skills to nurture
- • One-to-one counting: touch each object as you say each number.
- • Cardinality: the last number counted tells “how many in all.”
- • Subitizing: recognizing small amounts (like 3 dots) instantly, without counting.
Everyday practice
Count stairs, set the table together (“we need four forks”), and compare piles of snacks. Games like Count Objects and Number Match reinforce the same ideas with instant, friendly feedback.
