Phonics Basics Every Parent Can Use

A plain-English guide to the sounds that unlock reading.
Phonics is simply the link between letters and the sounds they make. Learning that the letter “b” says /b/ is the key that lets a child eventually sound out “bat,” “big,” and thousands of other words.
Start with sounds, not names
Before drilling letter names, help your child hear sounds. Play “what starts with /s/?” and clap the first sound in family names. This “phonemic awareness” is the strongest early predictor of reading success.
A gentle order
Most programs introduce sounds in an order that quickly makes real words. A common early set is:
- • s, a, t, p, i, n — these alone spell dozens of words
- • Then m, d, g, o, c, k
- • Save trickier letters (x, q, y) for later
Keep it short and happy
